Zomi body declares month-long mourning over Valte’s death

The Zomi Co-ordination Committee (ZCC) has declared the month of March as Zomi National Mourning in honor of the Late Vungzagin Valte, BJP MLA of Manipur’s Thanlon Assembly Constituency. “Collective mourning shall continue until March 31 during which all celebratory and entertainment activities remain suspended as a mark of collective respect, dignity, and disciplined observance,” a statement issued by ZCC said.”The month-long mourning shall further stand as a peaceful and silent expression of collective grief, remembrance, and the community’s resolve for justice,” it stated. Valte, who was from the Zomi tribes, suffered crippling injuries in an attack by protesters in the Imphal in May 2023 when Meitei-Kuki ethnic clashes began. He died at a hospital in Gurugram on February 20.
