In a strategic move to strengthen its regional content portfolio, ZEE5 announced the World Digital Premiere of Bengal’s blockbuster Bohurupi on May 9. Directed by celebrated filmmakers Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy, the film boasts a stellar cast including Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Abir Chatterjee, Ritabhari Chakraborty, and Koushani Mukherjee. Inspired by real-life bank heists in West Bengal (1998–2005), Bohurupi has earned critical acclaim for its gripping storyline, emotional depth, and standout performances.
Set in the 90s, the narrative follows Bikram, a wrongfully imprisoned commerce graduate who emerges as a master of disguise, leading to a tense showdown with cop Sumanta Ghosal. The film explores themes of survival, morality, and identity, and has already captured significant attention ahead of its digital release.
Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy, Directors of Bohrupi, went on to say, “With Bohurupi, we wanted to explore how far a man can go when pushed to the edge by a system meant to protect him. Set against the backdrop of a turbulent era, the story is not just about crime or disguise—it’s about reclaiming identity and agency in a world that often silences the truth. We’re thrilled that ZEE5 is bringing this story to a wider audience through its World Digital Premiere, and we hope viewers connect with the emotional depth and the thrilling twists that make Bohurupi more than just a heist drama”
Abir Chatterjee, who played Sumanta Ghosal, said, “Playing Sumanta Ghosal in Bohurupi was a deeply immersive experience. He’s not just a police officer chasing a criminal—he’s a man torn between duty and morality, constantly questioning where the line between justice and revenge lies. Working with Nandita di and Shibu da on a story this layered was truly special, and I’m thrilled that audiences across the country can now watch Bohurupi on ZEE5..”
Ritabhari Chakraborty, who played Pori Ghoshal, expressed, “Bohurupi is a very special film for me; it’s my first time working with Shibuda and Nanditadi under their direction. They have made such wonderful films that have inspired me so much to become an actor and to create roles. I consider myself very, very lucky because the character I ultimately got to portray is one of the most challenging roles I have ever played. It has so many layers and carries such intense internal pain that bringing it to the screen was incredibly challenging.”
Koushani Mukherjee, who played Jhimli Pramanik, shared, “Playing Jhimli Pramanik in Bohurupi has been one of the most powerful experiences of my career. She’s fierce, complex, and caught in the storm of circumstances beyond her control. Every scene pushed me emotionally, and working with such an incredible team only made it more special. Bohurupi is intense, gripping, and full of heart—and I’m beyond excited that audiences across the country will finally get to experience it on ZEE5.”
In Kolkata, industry experts anticipate a sharp rise in ZEE5 subscriptions. The strong local fanbase for the director duo and lead actors positions Bohurupi as a potential game-changer for ZEE5’s regional growth strategy, particularly in eastern India where OTT consumption is steadily rising. Bohurupi will stream exclusively on ZEE5 starting May 9, 2025, targeting both loyal Bengali audiences and new digital consumers.
