World Rare Disease Day Observed at RIMS with Awareness Programmes

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, celebrated World Rare Disease Day 2026 with a program held at the OPD Complex, aimed at raising awareness of rare diseases, enhancing early diagnosis, and reinforcing support for affected patients and their families. The event featured notable personalities, including Prof. G. Sunil Kumar Sharma, the director of RIMS Imphal, who served as the chief guest, and Prof. S. Subhaschandra Singh, Medical Superintendent and Head of the Department of Radiodiagnosis, who presided over the ceremony. Dr. N. Shugeta Devi, Nodal Officer for Rare Diseases from the State Health Service, Government of Manipur, and Prof. Ch. Shyamsunder, Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Nodal Officer of the Rare Diseases Committee at RIMS, were also among the Guests of Honor.

In his keynote address, Prof. Sharma noted that this was RIMS’ inaugural observance of World Rare Disease Day since being designated as the 13th Centre of Excellence in January of the previous year. He pointed out that rare diseases impact over 300 million individuals globally, with many being chronic, genetic, progressive, and life-threatening, posing significant challenges in diagnosis and presenting limited treatment options. Under the National Policy for Rare Diseases, 2021, RIMS offers advanced diagnostic services, multidisciplinary clinical care, genetic counseling, research, training, and financial aid of up to ₹50 lakh for eligible patients. The institute also aims to collaborate with other Centers of Excellence to enhance coordinated care and service delivery for rare diseases.

The program attracted various attendees, including the Deputy Director (Admin), Dean (Academic), and Heads of Departments, as well as faculty members, nursing officials, staff, and students of RIMS, contributing to a comprehensive atmosphere of awareness and support for rare disease initiatives. Additionally, the Dental College at RIMS Imphal conducted an Anti-Ragging Workshop for 1st and 2nd Year BDS students, complying with Dental Council of India regulations, promoting a safe and inclusive academic setting.
