The much-anticipated Shillong Western Bypass has once again run into rough weather despite attempts by the implementing agencies to expedite work during the peak construction season. In packages 2 and 3 of the project, construction has been frequently stalled by landowners due to delays in disbursement of land compensation by the East Khasi Hills district administration. According to sources, the implementing agencies have repeatedly written to the East Khasi Hills district administration, urging the prompt release of compensation to landowners.
It has been confirmed that funds for land compensation already been deposited with the district administration but remain undistributed. Landowners have reportedly expressed their support for the road project, emphasizing that their only demand is the timely release of compensation. However, the ongoing disruptions are causing further delays in the construction of the Western Bypass, which involves precise work due to its greenfield alignment.
