Wokha DC Orders Parking Regulations to Streamline Urban Movement

The Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Wokha, Nagaland, has issued a new order aimed at addressing urban mobility issues, enhancing public safety, and improving disaster preparedness due to rising traffic congestion and uncontrolled parking in the town. The order emphasizes the urgent need for a regulated parking system in response to the increasing number of vehicles and the lack of public parking spaces. Deputy Commissioner Vineet Kumar highlighted that numerous recent business developments lack adequate parking for customers and employees, creating problems such as traffic jams, obstruction of emergency routes, and risks to public safety, particularly in emergencies.

To tackle these issues, the district administration has set a deadline of January 31, 2026, requiring all private and commercial vehicle owners currently parking in public areas to make alternative arrangements within 45 days. Future car purchases should also consider parking availability. Retail centers, businesses, and new constructions must provide sufficient on-site parking, with the Town Council tasked to expedite approval processes for new developments per the Municipal Act.

Monitoring of parking along the National Highway will begin on February 1, 2026, with a task force formed from various local departments to enforce compliance. The municipal Council, in cooperation with the Traffic Police, will conduct comprehensive reviews of parking arrangements on municipal roads, designating and regulating proper parking zones to ensure unobstructed access for emergency vehicles.
