Why India’s Smart TVs still need external protection: “In-Built Stabilizer” is a Myth

The term “in-built stabilizer” has increasingly become a marketing highlight in India’s television market, often reassuring buyers about protection from voltage fluctuations. However, industry experts say the phrase is widely misunderstood and does not offer the same safeguard as a dedicated external stabilizer. Modern televisions are equipped with an SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply), which converts AC power into the DC power required by internal circuits. Experts explain that the SMPS is not designed to regulate external voltage fluctuations like a stabilizer. As a result, televisions may continue operating during voltage variations, giving the impression of protection, while internal components may still face stress.

Voltage instability continues to affect many parts of India. Semi-urban and rural regions frequently experience fluctuation cycles, while urban households often encounter load imbalances when several high-consumption appliances operate simultaneously. Sustained voltage deviation can increase SMPS operating temperatures, accelerating component degradation and shortening the product’s lifespan. Power restoration after outages can also trigger microsecond voltage spikes that reach extremely high levels. Test reports shared by consumer appliance brand V-Guard Industries indicate that prolonged voltage stress significantly elevates SMPS temperatures, which can affect long-term reliability. If the SMPS fails, sensitive electronics may be directly exposed to high AC input, potentially leading to expensive repairs.

In Kolkata, demand for larger, feature-rich smart televisions has grown steadily as consumers upgrade their home entertainment systems. However, with higher investments in premium televisions, experts caution that operational tolerance should not be mistaken for operational safety. V-Guard Industries suggests that external voltage protection remains crucial to safeguard these high-value devices from unseen electrical stress and ensure long-term durability.
