The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) election results were announced on February24, with the Voice of the People Party (VPP) winning absolute majority by securing 17 seats. The landslide victory has established VPP as the majority party in the 29-member council. The United Democratic Party (UDP) managed to win 5 seats, while the National People’s Party (NPP) secured 4. The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) claimed 1 seat, whereas two Independent candidates also emerged victorious.
The Indian National Congress (INC), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) failed to win any seats in this election. With VPP securing a decisive lead, the party is now in a position to form the council without the need for coalition partners.
The results mark a significant shift in Khasi Hills’ political landscape, indicating a growing preference for new leadership and governance approaches. As the newly elected members prepare to assume office, attention will be on VPP’s governance strategies and policy priorities in the days ahead.
