Violence on Guwahati outskirts: 16 arrested for assault on police, officials

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the arrest of 16 individuals in Azara, located on the outskirts of Guwahati, for allegedly attacking police and officials while they were serving eviction notices to encroachers. Sarma stated that a permanent police camp will be established in the area, insisting that all encroachers, described as “unknown people,” will face eviction. He noted that despite the successful eviction of 1.5 lakh bighas of land in the state, the fight against encroachers persists, attributing this resistance to the absence of BJP’s regulatory presence in the region. Sarma emphasized that the illegal settlers are not indigenous to the area and are comprised of unspecified individuals. Holding the Home department portfolio, he directed stringent actions against the assailants, confirming that roughly 16 had already been detained. He reiterated that the enforcement of law will be rigorous against encroachers, particularly in tribal belt and block areas.
