A violent assault on eight individuals, including six women and two men, in Maremei Liangmai Village, Senapati District, on January 12 has sparked outrage among local tribal leaders in Manipur. The attack, which occurred around 7:00 pm, left several victims seriously injured, with one requiring advanced medical treatment in Imphal. According to a joint statement by Liangmai tribal leaders, the assault was allegedly carried out by a group led by “RK Remping and his grandsons, along with members of NSCN-IM cadres.” The attackers reportedly used cane sticks and weapon butts, subjecting the victims to “savage attack,” sexual harassment, and threats with loaded weapons.
The attackers also reportedly blocked the victims from seeking medical help, worsening the situation. However, the Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) intervened, ensuring the victims were taken to Senapati Hospital for treatment of their severe injuries and emotional trauma.“This brutal act of violence is a gross violation of human rights and an assault on the safety of women in our community,” the statement read. The Liangmai Pui Naga Ruangdi and Liangmai Naga Katimai Ruangdi, the tribal organizations representing the Liangmai Tribe, have demanded immediate action against the alleged perpetrators. They have called for a “fair and impartial inquiry” and for authorities to provide protection to the survivors.
Local community groups have vowed to pursue justice for the victims, with tribal leaders emphasizing that they will continue their efforts until justice is served. The incident has also sparked broader concerns about violence against women in the region, prompting calls for stronger action from the state government and law enforcement agencies.
