The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) and Smile Train have launched the Meghalaya Smiles Campaign, an educational endeavor that goes beyond traditional boundaries. Nearly 2000 students at the USTM campus in 9th Mile, Khanapara, embraced a day of learning, compassion, and philanthropy. Founder Chancellor of USTM, Shri Mahbubul Hoque, highlighted the significance of inclusive education, stating, “USTM stands as a dynamic space where education is not confined to textbooks but extends to shaping compassionate leaders.” The Smile Train partnership, he noted, adds a humanitarian dimension to academic pursuits.
Anjali Katoch, Head of Communications and Business Development at Smile Train India, expressed gratitude to the students, recognizing their potential in raising awareness. “Education is a powerful tool, and engaging with USTM students can create a ripple effect of knowledge and empathy,” she articulated, emphasizing the campaign’s alignment with Smile Train’s commitment to providing education on clefts.
Dr Werlock Kharshiing, Smile Train Partner Surgeon and Chairman of Woodland Hospital, Shillong, discussed the educational journey spanning 17 years. The Meghalaya Smiles event, featuring quizzes, games, Phawar performances, a flash mob, and the screening of ‘Smile Pinki,’ became an interactive platform fostering learning about clefts while encouraging support for educational initiatives.
