UPPL Releases First List of 7 Candidates for Assam Assembly Elections

United Peoples’ Party Liberal (UPPL) president Pramod Boro, who was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha, will contest the assembly polls from Tamulpur constituency. Releasing the first list of seven candidates, UPPL general secretary Raju Kumar Narzary said the party will contest in all 15 constituencies under the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), and a second list will be released after a few days. UPPL is an NDA constituent along with the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), its principal rival in the BTR. Boro was the NDA candidate in the just-concluded Rajya Sabha polls for three seats from Assam, along with BJP’s Jogendra Mohan and Terash Gowala, and all were elected unopposed. Narzary said he will contest from Dotma, while sitting Kokrajhar MLA Lawrence Islary has been renominated from the same seat.

Former All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) president Dipen Boro will be the party candidate for Udalguri, and three-time former MLA Kamalsing Narzary from Bijni. Aninda Basumatary has been fielded from Gossaigaon, and Nereshon Boro from Bhergaon. UPPL has seven MLAs in the 126-member assembly, with Handloom and Textile Minister Urkhwa Gwra Brahma in the state cabinet.
