Union Minister lays development projects worth ₹50 crore under PMMSY in fisheries sector

The Center’s decision to support recreational fishing in the East Khasi Hills District has significantly boosted Meghalaya’s fishing industry. Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh on January 6 officially opened and laid the groundwork for 50 fisheries development projects in the Northeast totaling ₹50 crore.

The Northeastern Region States Meet event, which was hosted by the Department of Fisheries, demonstrated the government’s dedication to supporting sustainable aquaculture and improving local livelihoods. With a central portion of Rs 27 lakh and a beneficiary share of Rs 20 lakh, the project’s overall cost in Meghalaya is Rs 50 lakh. The establishment of an integrated aqua park in Assam’s Darrang District is anticipated to produce 150 MT of fish a year, bringing in ₹10–15 crore in revenue and providing up to 2,000 job possibilities.

To preserve fish products and lower post-harvest losses, Manipur will install ice plants and cold storage facilities in the Thoubal and Imphal districts. The establishment of freshwater finfish hatcheries in the districts of Mokokchung and Kiphire is one of Nagaland’s three initiatives. Finfish hatcheries and ornamental fish-rearing units would be established as part of the Tripura projects.
