Union Home Minister promises aid package for flood-hit Assam

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has pledged unwavering support to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as the state grapples with a devastating flood situation triggered by incessant rains. In a recent conversation, Shah assured Sarma of the central government’s commitment to provide all necessary assistance to mitigate the crisis.

Addressing the ongoing challenges, Shah emphasized the active deployment of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) in relief and rescue operations. “On account of the heavy rains, a flood-like situation has occurred in Assam. Spoke with Assam CM Shri @himantabiswaJi about the ongoing situation,” Shah stated. The floods have inflicted widespread damage across Assam, claiming lives and wreaking havoc on infrastructure, agriculture, and livelihoods. Over 2.42 million people have been affected across 30 districts, with Dhubri district bearing a severe brunt, impacting 775,721 individuals.

Key agricultural areas have been inundated, submerging 63,490.97 hectares of crop land, while numerous villages remain submerged across 112 revenue circles. The devastating toll includes losses among wildlife, with 92 animals perishing and 95 animals rescued from Kaziranga National Park alone. Rising water levels in the Brahmaputra River have exacerbated the situation, surpassing danger marks at several crucial points. Districts like Cachar, Kamrup, Hailakandi, Nagaon, and Dibrugarh are among those significantly affected, underscoring the scale of the disaster.
