Two Meghalaya Girls Rescued from Suspected Trafficking Racket in Delhi–Haryana

Two Khasi-Pnar girls, aged 15 and 18, from the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya were rescued from a suspected human trafficking network operating between Delhi and Haryana. Their rescue was facilitated by a collaborative effort involving the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Delhi Unit and the Special Police Unit for North East Region (SPUNER). The girls were reportedly lured to Delhi by an acquaintance with false promises of employment as domestic helpers, without any prior notification to their parents. Upon their arrival, they were taken to a spa in Haryana, where they faced exploitation.

The victims managed to reach out to their families, who notified the KSU Delhi Unit, prompting a swift response. The KSU coordinated with SPUNER to execute a targeted rescue operation in Haryana, resulting in the successful retrieval of the two girls from the trafficking network. Marbiang Khongwir, president of KSU Delhi Unit, emphasized the increased dangers that youth face when seeking job opportunities outside their home state and urged both parents and young individuals to be wary of fraudulent promises.

Following the rescue, officials are making arrangements for the counseling and safe return of the victims to their families in Meghalaya. The KSU also expressed gratitude towards SPUNER officials, the authorities at Meghalaya House, and the rescue team for their quick and effective action. Additionally, they acknowledged Kyrmen Shylla’s support in coordinating the travel arrangements necessary for the girls’ safe return home.
