TIM Rejects ‘Kuki-Zo-Hmar MLA’ Tag

Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) has expressed strong disapproval of a recent press release from the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) Manipur, which referred to certain legislators as “Kuki-Zo-Hmar MLAs.” This classification applied to six MLAs from various constituencies is deemed by TIM as a form of “communal and ethnic labelling” that undermines democratic representation. They argue that such terminology fosters division and jeopardizes the Assembly’s role as an inclusive institution. TIM claims this exclusivity not only promotes ethnic division but also risks characterizing the Chief Minister merely as a representative of the Meitei community, threatening the overall spirit of constitutional representation in Manipur.

In light of ongoing tensions, TIM emphasizes the necessity for leadership aimed at healing and trust-building, criticizing statements that exacerbate communal fault lines. They call on the government to maintain the Assembly’s dignity and inclusivity while highlighting concerns regarding misidentification and the implications of Kuki supremacy, linking these factors to violence in the region.

Moreover, TIM underscores the importance of recognizing the distinct identities of the Thadou and other indigenous tribes, who reject being labeled as Kuki, thereby calling for a cessation of such terminology in official communications. They note the recent positive engagement of certain MLAs in legislative processes as a step towards constructive dialogue and governance, while urging the government to issue a public apology for the mislabeling and to prevent its recurrence. The statement positions respect for indigenous identities not just as a matter of terminology but as essential for the truth and integrity of Manipur’s societal fabric.
