Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed strong disapproval regarding statements made by certain Bangladeshi officials suggesting that India’s northeastern states should merge with Bangladesh. He described these remarks as “irresponsible and dangerous” and emphasized that India would not remain passive in response to such claims. Sarma’s comments were a direct reaction to recent statements by Hasnat Abdullah, a leader of Bangladesh’s newly formed National Citizen Party (NCP), who called for Dhaka to “isolate” India’s northeastern states and support separatist movements within the region if India continued to destabilize Bangladesh. The Chief Minister noted that for the past year, there has been a troubling trend of repeated assertions from Bangladesh advocating for the separation of Northeast India and its incorporation into Bangladesh.
