Speaking at a celebration of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, Civil Aviation Minister Kinjurapu Rammohan Naidu commended Meghalaya’s tribal groups for their deep reverence for the natural world and their priceless expertise in environmental preservation. Celebrated across the country, this day marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of the legendary tribal leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda. Speaking to a crowd in the state, Naidu underlined that Meghalayan tribal groups, whose tradition places a strong emphasis on environmental preservation, have a lot to teach the rest of the world. Speaking about his own visit to the revered Mawphlang Grove, which is 25 kilometers from Shillong, Naidu said it was enlightening and highlighted the area’s practical and spiritual connections to nature.
In reference to the Khasi community’s sacred woodlands, he quoted a local guide who said, “The Khasi community are borrowing from future generations, rather than inheriting them from their ancestors.” Additionally, the Union Minister praised the state’s advancements under Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma’s direction. Naidu highlighted initiatives to improve connectivity and stated his excitement about the region’s civil aviation industry’s future growth. Recognizing the sacrifices made by tribal leaders and freedom fighters who have battled for their rights, identity, and culture, Naidu emphasized the significance of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas. In an effort to see more tribal groups take the initiative in promoting their legacy and sustainable practices, he urged for increased awareness of tribal cultures and expertise on the international scene.
