The Meghalaya Education Department has been adamantly against educational institutions declaring school holidays without permission. A comprehensive set of rules for the 2025 academic year has been prepared by the Department in a significant attempt to improve and streamline education. On February 10, all students will start a systematic class readiness program for the 2025 academic year. Primary school students (Classes I–V) will participate in this preparation phase until March 7; middle and high school students (Classes VI–X) will finish it by February 28. It will focus on foundational learning and skill development.
Exam schedules for Classes VI–IX will henceforth be managed by the Department in an effort to foster accountability and transparency. To ensure standardized assessment procedures, schools must transmit all evaluation findings to the Department’s online platform. With distinct term dates, the academic calendar has been thoughtfully planned. Classes I–IX will conclude on December 17 and pre-primary on November 28, respectively, and there will be a winter break after that.
Schools must fulfill regulatory criteria of 200 working days for primary levels and 220 for higher classes, which translate to 800 and 1,000 teaching hours, respectively, in order to guarantee adequate instructional time. The Department has implemented concentrated learning times at the beginning of each term in response to the National Achievement Survey’s (NAS) concerns about academic performance. Higher courses will receive three weeks of focused instruction, while primary students will devote four weeks to core learning. The goal of this program is to improve overall academic performance and fortify fundamental abilities.
