Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio officially opened Meluri, formerly a Phek subdivision, on Wednesday. As part of the district’s development efforts, Rio also officially opened a multidisciplinary sports stadium, making Meluri Nagaland’s 17th district. Nine of Nagaland’s 17 districts were established recently, including Meluri. Speaking to a sizable crowd at the public square, Rio praised the work of his coworkers, the chief secretary’s bureaucracy, and every officer engaged in the procedure, declaring that the long-standing call for a distinct district had at last been fulfilled “in God’s own time.”
According to the chief minister, Meluri district became the state’s youngest district when it was formally notified on November 2, 2024. For recommending the district’s creation and not objecting to the decision, he thanked the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) and its leadership. He recalled that the chairman bench court had been established 67 years prior, in 1958, and that Meluri had been operating as an administrative center ever since.
Rio emphasized the Chakhesang and Pochury communities’ historical ties and asked them to maintain their brotherhood in spite of the governmental split. The chief minister prohibited certain ministries from continuing to document the districts in a different way, despite the fact that the government had formally named them following appropriate discussions. In order to preserve uniformity, he suggested that all requests for name changes be submitted through the government.
