Tesla is quietly offering discounts of up to ₹2 lakh on its Model Y SUVs in India after sales momentum slowed, according to a Bloomberg report. The company reportedly imported around 300 Model Y units last year, but nearly a third still remain unsold months later.
Instead of announcing a formal price cut, Tesla is extending selective incentives during test drives and customer discussions a strategy aimed at clearing unsold inventory without altering the official price tag. Some offers are being made on a case-by-case basis, signalling a tactical clearing of stock rather than a broad discount campaign.
Tesla’s India entry has been challenging due to the Model Y’s pricing. Being fully imported, the SUV’s price crosses ₹60 lakh after import duties, placing it in the luxury bracket. Analysts say this has limited appeal in a cost-sensitive market where localisation heavily influences purchase decisions. Though initial bookings were encouraging, many buyers reportedly shifted to rivals such as BMW and BYD, which offer competitive pricing and stronger local support.
