Tensions Persist as UNC Threatens Resolute Action Against Kuki Aggression

On February 7, 2026, an attack on Starling Shimray by a group of Kuki youths in Shakarphung incited significant violence in Litan, Ukhrul, leading to widespread unrest, property destruction, and loss for both Naga and Kuki communities. The United Naga Council (UNC) expressed serious concerns over this violence, which includes an attack on Azan Abonmai’s home on February 9, stating a firm stance of “neutrality” amidst the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur that began on May 3, 2023. The UNC condemned the increasing violent acts and the visible presence of Kuki militants armed with sophisticated weapons, alleging that Indian security forces have facilitated such aggressions against Naga properties.

Amidst these tensions, the UNC underscored the core issue of land ownership and reaffirmed its commitment to a long-term solution focused on peace and justice. The council warned against further aggression towards the Naga community, asserting they will defend their rights and identity resolutely. The UNC called for mutual respect and collaborative efforts toward peaceful coexistence among all ethnic groups.

Coinciding with these events, the Naga Lui-Ngai-Ni Seed Sowing festival is scheduled for February 15 in Ukhrul. The festival is portrayed not as mere revelry but an opportunity to reinforce fraternity, love, and mutual respect among the Naga family and its neighbors. Through this celebration, the UNC aims to remind participants of their forefathers’ wisdom and encourage a commitment to improvement and development, fostering an era of harmony and goodwill. They sought understanding and involvement from all parties to ensure a meaningful and restorative celebration of Lui-Ngai-Ni 2026.
