TechnoStruct Brings India’s First Nature-Themed Airport Terminal to Life Through Digital Engineering

A new terminal named the “Bamboo Orchid” has been inaugurated at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Recognized as India’s first nature-themed airport terminal, it reflects the cultural and natural identity of Assam and involves an investment of approximately ₹5,000 crore. The terminal is designed to handle around 13.1 million passengers annually, enhancing aviation connectivity in Northeast India and positioning the region as a gateway to Southeast Asia.

The architecture draws inspiration from Assam’s kopou phool (foxtail orchid) and local bamboo species. TechnoStruct, a firm specializing in Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design Construction (VDC), was crucial in executing the project. They provided advanced BIM coordination during the construction phases, working closely with contractors on various architectural components, including façades and drywall works. By employing structured BIM methodologies, TechnoStruct created coordinated LOD 400 execution models to turn the intricate architectural designs into accurate digital models.

Post-construction, they helped develop LOD 500 as-built models, complete with asset coding, which will aid airport authorities in efficient operations, maintenance, and lifecycle management. Roy Aniruddha, Founder and Chairman of TechnoStruct, noted that the Bamboo Orchid terminal represents the future of infrastructure development, highlighting their role in advancing India’s aviation sector through the integration of advanced BIM technologies that ensure precise coordination across design, construction, and operational management.
