Technical Failure at Sanis Transmission Sub-Station Triggers Prolonged Blackout in Two Nagaland Districts

Large parts of Nagaland’s Wokha and Tseminyu districts have been facing a power outage for more than 48 hours after a technical fault developed at the Sanis Transmission Sub-Station.According to the Power department, the blackout was triggered by a mechanical failure in the DC battery charger installed at the sub-station. The fault led to a disruption in the electricity supply across the two districts. Officials said a technical team from Kohima has been sent to the site and repair work is currently underway to restore the power supply as soon as possible.

The department informed that arrangements had earlier been made to ensure uninterrupted supply in such situations through a double-feeder transmission system for Wokha district. This system was meant to provide electricity through an alternative line from Kohima during emergencies. However, the backup transmission line could not be used after the main line near a stone-crushing quarry at Longsa village was reportedly damaged. Officials said mud had been dumped in the area, which led to damage to the line. The incident was attributed to alleged public negligence, making the alternative route unusable. Due to the damage, the Kohima line could not be activated to supply power to the affected districts.

Power department officials said efforts are being made to repair and reinstall the damaged line. The technical team is working on the system and authorities expressed hope that electricity supply would be restored soon. Meanwhile, the prolonged power cut has caused difficulties for residents in both districts. Students appearing for board examinations have been among the worst affected as they struggle to study without electricity.
