Tata Communications brings light and health to Meghalaya’s Garo Hills villages

Tata Communications has launched a Climate Resilient Village Programme under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. Over two days, senior leaders and volunteers implemented transformative clean energy and health solutions in BuriparaAkilang and MandalNokat villages, showcasing the company’s commitment to sustainable development. The initiative, titled “Beyond the Boardroom,” provided leaders with an immersive experience of local life and the extensive CSR efforts in the region.

The program addressed critical needs through solar electrification and the introduction of clean cookstoves. In Buripara Akilang, solar panels were installed in households, powering six lights and a fan each, while four solar streetlights illuminated key village areas. MandalNokat witnessed the replacement of traditional chulhas with clean cookstoves, reducing firewood consumption by 50% and improving respiratory health. These initiatives have already benefited over 3,000 households and healthcare centers in the region.

The positive impact of Tata Communications’ initiatives resonates beyond the villages, potentially inspiring clean energy adoption across Meghalaya, including urban centers like Shillong. With its bustling markets, Shillong could integrate solar-powered streetlights and clean energy solutions, setting an example for other cities. Mukul Kumar, Vice President of Tata Communications, emphasized the importance of sustainable practices, stating, “We are confident these efforts will foster an inclusive and sustainable future.”
