Sharmila Bhuyan Named to Lead Fast-Track Sessions Court in Zubeen Case

The Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court has appointed Sharmila Bhuyan, currently a District Judge in Baksa, to lead an exclusive fast-track sessions court for the daily trial proceedings in the Zubeen Garg death case. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this development on social media, emphasizing its significance in the effort to deliver justice in this high-profile murder case. He expressed gratitude to Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar for being responsive to the state’s request and for his support in enhancing the judicial process. The Assam Cabinet had previously sanctioned the establishment of this dedicated court on February 27, under Section 346(1) BNSS, 2023, which reflects the serious nature of the case surrounding the death of Zubeen Garg, a renowned singer and cultural figure in Assam. The Cabinet’s decision, made during a meeting led by Sarma, was motivated by the case’s sensitivity and its potential impact on public order and the credibility of governance. The government is now awaiting the High Court’s actions regarding the formation of this dedicated court.
