Despite 37 years having passed since Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar parted ways, Salim-Javed remain one of the most famous screenwriting duos in Indian cinema history. Although many have speculated and tried to uncover the real reason for their split, it remains a mystery till date.
Recently, veteran actress and Javed’s wife Shabana Azmi commented on the writers’ separation.
The five-time National Film Award-winning actor addressed the topic while appearing on Salim Khan’s son, actor Arbaaz Khan’s talk show, The Invincibles.
Shabana Azmi also opened up about dealing with her husband Javed Akhtar’s alcohol addiction and stressed that it was “difficult”. In the promotional video, he also mentioned the names of veteran actors Amitabh Bachchan and Mithun Chakraborty. He said, “In the process of becoming a star, you move away from life.” Shabana will also discuss her relationship with Javed’s first wife Honey Irani and their children Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar in the episode to be aired on Tuesday.
During an interview with Mojo Story earlier this year, Javed Akhtar confessed that he had not kicked his alcohol addiction when he married Shabana Azmi, and he had to struggle with it for the first decade of their marriage. “Somehow, she manages it for the first 10 years of the marriage. He managed a person who was drinking alcohol. One day, I quit because I realized that if I continued drinking like this, I would die by the time I was 50.
“On July 31, 1991, I drank a large bottle of Bacardi. And, from the first of the next month, even if I grab a glass of champagne for a toast, I don’t consume it. Willpower is not a thing. It’s the intensity of desire,” Javed said in an episode of the first season of The Invincibles.
