In a significant development towards restoring peace in Manipur, residents from seven districts voluntarily surrendered a large cache of weapons and military equipment to local authorities on February 25.According to official reports, a total of 87 weapons, ranging from military-grade rifles to improvised explosives, were handed over at various police stations across Churachandpur, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Kangpokpi, Jiribam, and Imphal West districts.
Among the surrendered weapons were Self-Loading Rifles (SLRs), INSAS light machine guns, AK-47 rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, and an 81mm mortar. Additionally, several country-made firearms and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were submitted. Authorities also received large quantities of ammunition, bulletproof vests, helmets, radio sets, and military uniforms.In parallel, security forces intensified search operations in vulnerable areas across the hill and valley districts. These operations led to the recovery of additional weaponry, including improvised mortars, bombs, and approximately 5.5 kg of IEDs with detonators. The recovered explosives were destroyed on-site near H. Monjang village in Tengnoupal district.
Officials have welcomed the voluntary surrender, viewing it as a positive step towards reducing armed violence in the state. They expressed hope that more individuals and groups will come forward to lay down arms and contribute to lasting peace and stability in Manipur.
