Script Row: ANSAM, TYCM Reject MEELAL’s Push, Call It Unacceptable

The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) has criticized the Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasilloi Apunba Lup (MEELAL) for mandating that vehicle registration numbers be inscribed in Meetei Mayek script, deeming it an illogical and coercive imposition that undermines the cultural identities and constitutional rights of diverse communities within Manipur. ANSAM argues that such a directive does not represent cultural renaissance but rather an attempt at coercive particularism that infringes upon the pluralistic, multicultural framework of the state. Manipur hosts various indigenous groups, each with unique linguistic traditions; thus, enforcing a single script is seen as an affront to their identity and cultural freedom.

The association firmly states that it will not comply with demands perceived as unconstitutional, insisting on the need for cultural affirmation without hegemonic overreach. ANSAM warns that if any negative consequences arise from MEELAL’s insistence on this policy, MEELAL should be held accountable for its actions. They urge the Manipur government to intervene and uphold the constitution’s commitment to justice and coexistence among diverse communities.

Furthermore, the Tribal Youth Council Manipur-Central Headquarters (TYCM-CHQ) has expressed disapproval of MEELAL’s pronouncement, which mandates tribal vehicle owners to conform to these demands. TYCM highlights that the Indian government has not enforced the national script for vehicle registration, and stresses the necessity of respecting the rights of tribal communities. They advocate for a collaborative approach that respects all communities in Manipur, warning that a failure to do so may disrupt the state’s fragile harmony and coexistence. TYCM acknowledges the importance of promoting the Meetei Mayek script but insists it should not come at the expense of tribal rights, asserting that MEELAL must bear responsibility for any incidents occurring due to their imposition of this mandate.
