Row Over New CM Residence: Akhil Gogoi Questions Costly Project in Amingaon

Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi has vehemently opposed the proposed construction of a luxury official residence for the Chief Minister in Amingaon, asserting it is part of an agenda to relocate key institutions to the Jalukbari constituency. Gogoi’s criticisms were voiced at a Guwahati press conference where he revealed details of the plan, which involves a three-storey building covering approximately 25,100 square feet and costing ₹9.51 crore for structural work alone. He argued that additional costs for interior decoration and furnishings would elevate the total expenditure to five-star levels, questioning the necessity of such a residence given the existing official residences in Koinadhora, Kharghuli, and Dispur, especially amid the state’s financial burdens. He cited neglect in education and healthcare as evidence of misplaced government priorities and called for a transparent inquiry into the use of public funds for such a lavish project. In response, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma refuted these claims, clarifying that the building is intended as an official residence rather than a personal one and noted that its completion will take several years.
