Rift in Meghalaya Congress over KHADC election ticket allocation

The Mahila Congress members from Umroi expressed their dissatisfaction on Friday with the Meghalaya Congress’s decision to award the party ticket to Micky Douglas Syiem. Syiem joined Congress on January 3 only on the condition of receiving a party ticket for the upcoming Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) polls. He was chosen over former MDC Albinus Lyngdoh, whom the Mahila Congress members favoured.

They met Congress chief Vincent H. Pala today, requesting that the ticket be given to Lyngdoh. But their request was met with reluctance. In reaction, the Mahila Congress members walked out of the Congress Bhawan and vowed to support the VPP candidate instead. Congress decided to field Micky Douglas Syiem based on a report by the party working president PN Syiem, which highlighted his strong support from the Umroi Constituency People’s Forum (UCPF) and Congress backers. More defections from the UCPF to Congress are expected. In the meantime, the Mahila Congress members also revealed plans to meet with Albinus Lyngdoh and decide their next course of action.
