Fresh violence erupted in Manipur’s Jiribam district early Wednesday as suspected ‘tribal village volunteers’ set fire to a retired police officer’s house. The three-room residence at Jakuradhor, located 28 km from Jiribam district headquarters and near the Hmar-dominated Pherzawl district, was torched around 3:30 a.m.
The officer’s family had previously vacated the property due to earlier unrest in the area. The attack occurred despite a recent agreement aimed at restoring peace and preventing further violence.
On August 1, representatives from the Meitei and Hmar communities, along with officials from the Jiribam district administration, Assam Rifles, and CRPF, had met at a CRPF facility in Assam’s Cachar district. The meeting was intended to address and mitigate ongoing tensions among various communities including the Hmar, Meitei, Thadou, Paite, and Mizo.
