Rengma Selo Zi demands justice after attack on youths in Dimapur

The Rengma Selo Zi, the apex youth organization of the Rengma Nagas, has issued a strong condemnation following the brutal assault of three youths in Dimapur on the night of December 17, 2024. The attack, which involved two brothers from the Rengma community, has sparked widespread outrage in the region.

The victims, including one brother who is a student and an active member of the Rengma Selo Zi, were allegedly attacked by individuals claiming to be Naga National Workers. The assault occurred when the youths attempted to intervene and assist a friend and his colleague, who had been detained by the perpetrators.

The Rengma Selo Zi has described the attack as “heinous” and “unjustifiable,” stressing that such violence is unacceptable, particularly at a time when the Naga people are advocating for peace and a resolution to the long-standing Naga political issue.

In a formal letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, the organization has laid out a set of demands for immediate action:

Accountability and Legal Action: The perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions, and legal proceedings must be initiated to ensure they are punished.
Arrest of the Culprits: The group has demanded that the individuals responsible be apprehended within three days of the letter’s issuance.
Public Apology: A public apology must be made by the responsible group to the Naga people for their anti-national actions.
The Rengma Selo Zi has made it clear that failure to act within the stipulated three-day period will compel them to take democratic measures to seek justice. They have urged the district administration to treat the matter with urgency, emphasizing the need to protect the safety and dignity of every citizen.

The organization also raised concerns over the growing misuse of national service affiliations by criminal elements and reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of the Rengma people. The group called on the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
