Rally Row: Assam Opposition Leader Flags Alleged Offences to Women’s Commission

Leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, has urged the Assam State Commission for Women to investigate alleged offenses against women Congress leaders during a “Parivartan Yatra” before the Assembly elections. In a letter, he claims that BJP-affiliated individuals heckled and made derogatory remarks toward women leaders while their convoy was attacked near Bihaguri. Several leaders, including Rupa Kalita Das and Trishna Bora Kakati, reportedly sustained injuries during the incident. Saikia terms the events serious and calls for a probe under the Assam State Commission for Women Act, 1994, presenting digital evidence of violations against women’s rights as defined by the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. He specifies various offenses that may have occurred, including criminal conspiracy and insult to modesty, and contends that the incident breaches Articles 14 and 15 of the Indian Constitution, which ensure equality and protection against discrimination.
