Rajya Sabha Elections: BJP Fields Two Candidates; UPPL Chief Files Papers

On Thursday, two candidates nominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—Cabinet Minister and Mahmora MLA Jogen Mohan and Duliajan MLA Terash Gowalla—alongside United Peoples Party Liberal (UPPL) chief Pramod Boro, filed their nominations for the upcoming biennial Rajya Sabha elections scheduled for March 16. The three candidates are expected to win unopposed as there are no opposition or independent candidates contesting for the three vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha. Following the nomination process and verification of their nomination papers, these candidates will be officially declared elected unopposed to the Upper House of Parliament.

This election seeks to fill the vacancies of three Rajya Sabha members from Assam whose terms are expiring next month: Ajit Kumar Bhuyan (Independent), Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), and Sarbananda Sonowal (BJP). Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his congratulations to both Mohan and Gowalla for their party nominations, emphasizing that they are exceptional leaders with a strong history of public service and will significantly contribute to enriching parliamentary processes.

Sarma also clarified that the BJP would not contest or oppose any candidate nominated by the UPPL for the third seat in the elections. He mentioned that the UPPL has indicated the possibility of nominating a candidate, but the final decision is still pending. Acknowledging the BJP’s lack of numerical strength to secure the third seat, he stated that they are agreeable to Boro’s decision to contest for it.
