In a show of solidarity with the nationwide protest called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), various medical associations in Nagaland have announced their participation in the 24-hour strike. This protest is in response to the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. The IMA Nagaland State Branch, along with the Nagaland In-Service Doctors’ Association (NIDA), Nagaland Private Doctors Association (NPDA), and the Indian Dental Association Nagaland State Branch (IDANSB), will join the strike starting from 6 AM on August 17 to 6 AM on August 18.
President Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso and honorary secretary Dr. Aonungdok Tushi Ao have directed all district branches to adhere to the IMA Headquarters’ call for the strike. OPDs at both private and government hospitals will remain closed during this period, with emergency services continuing as usual. In line with the All India Federation of Government Doctors’ Associations’ decision, NIDA has urged its members to support the strike. However, as a body of government employees, NIDA cannot enforce a uniform approach. District units have been given the discretion to participate, with essential services and emergency operations remaining unaffected.
The Nagaland Private Doctors Association has endorsed the strike and requested private doctors across Nagaland to halt non-essential health services, including OPDs and elective surgeries. Essential and emergency services will remain operational. The Indian Dental Association Nagaland State Branch will also withdraw dental services for the same 24-hour period. President Dr. Limawati Pongen and hon. state secretary Dr. Neiphrezo Soriinuo emphasized that this action is in support of IMA’s call and aims to highlight the urgent need for improved safety and respect for healthcare workers.
