President’s Rule Ends in Manipur, Effect Takes Immediate Hold

After nearly a year, President’s Rule in Manipur has been lifted, allowing for the establishment of a new elected government following ethnic violence in the state. The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification rescinding President’s Rule just hours before the swearing-in ceremony of the new chief minister. Y Khemchand Singh, the leader of the NDA legislature party for BJP Manipur Pradesh, is set to be sworn in at 6 PM on February 4, 2026, at Lok Bhavan, with the ceremony attended by officials. The BJP highlighted that under Singh’s leadership, Manipur would progress towards peace, development, and good governance, signaling a new era of stability. This announcement followed Singh’s meeting with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, during which he formally claimed the mandate to form the new government, supported by two MLAs from the Kuki-Zo majority areas of Churachandpur and Pherzawl.
