President Droupadi Murmu received state honors in Suriname

On a three-day visit, President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Suriname on Sunday.  She was welcomed by Suriname’s protocol chief and India’s ambassador to Suriname. Her visit is intended to improve bilateral ties between India and the South American nation. The President is in the country for the first time since taking office in July of last year.

The President is accompanied by Union Minister of State for Rural Development, Niranjan Jyoti, and Member of Parliament, Rama Devi as part of the official Indian delegation. She arrived in Paramaribo, Suriname on her first State Visit, President CSantokhi of Suriname received her with full state honors at the airport.

The last time an Indian President visited Suriname was in 2018. In the second phase of her visit, President Murmu will visit Serbia from June 7 to hold a bilateral meeting with Serbian President Alexander Vusic, Prime Minister Ana Branbic, and National Assembly President Vladimir Oralik. She will also address a business program and talk to the Indian community. India and Suriname have close ties due to the Indian diaspora.
