Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam government aims to ban practicing of polygamy after child marriage crackdown.
According to the reports, during the crackdown many elderly men were found marrying many times often to minor girls.
The Chief Minister also marked about ban of polygamy is not for any particular community but only for those practicing polygamy.
The expert committee, along with Islamic scholars and intellectuals, will examine the law and “take us to the final goal of banning polygamy”, Sarma told during a press conference.
The process will not start by force or any aggression towards any individual but with proper examination. Expert committee will be form to examine the legality
”We want to stop a man, whether Hindu or Muslim, from marrying several times. We want to ban polygamy and declare it unconstitutional and illegal through legislative action,” CM added.
