Former cabinet minister and political veteran TA Ngullie, the longest-surviving elected NLA member since 1964, died on Sunday in Chümoukedima. His extended family is his surviving relatives. He was 90 years old. According to family sources, the remains will be transported to his hometown of Mungya in the Wokha district following the funeral service, which is scheduled for October 28 at 10 a.m. at Chümoukedima Ward-7.
T.A. Ngullie, who was born in 1934, was elected to the first NLA in 1964, representing the 37 Tyui assembly constituency. In the second, third, fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth, and ninth houses, he was re-elected. He held important positions in Finance, Planning, Industry, Agriculture, Power, and Law & Justice throughout his several stints as a cabinet minister. In addition, he held the positions of opposition leader, NLA, and deputy speaker.
With a strong interest in both domestic and foreign issues, his leadership went beyond state politics. He traveled the border areas between the two states to promote peace and played a key role in the establishment of the Nagaland-Assam Peace Mission. His lasting impact includes his efforts to the North East Council, which he co-founded with Hiteswar Saikia of Assam and former Meghalaya chief minister Capt. William Sangma.
