The Ningols United Progressive Initiative (NUPI), a leading women’s civil society group in Delhi, organized a memorial function in collaboration with six Meitei organizations across India to commemorate Nupi Lan—the historic “women’s war” movements of Manipur. These iconic uprisings, in 1904 and 1939, were pivotal in resisting colonial exploitation and embody the courage and activism of Manipuri women.
The event, held in Delhi, brought together Manipuri organizations from cities such as Kolkata, Guwahati, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Agartala. Women’s wings of these groups played a central role in organizing the function, emphasizing unity and resilience among Manipuri women.Prominent figures graced the occasion, sharing their reflections on Nupi Lan’s enduring legacy. Ngangom Bala Devi, India’s first female footballer to score 50 international goals, highlighted the strength of Manipuri women. “Their courage inspires future generations. However, peace is crucial for a brighter future for Manipur’s youth. I urge the government to restore normalcy in the state,” she said.
Manipuri actress and social activist Soma Laishram praised the movement’s significance. “Nupi Lan exemplifies unity and determination. Even amid recent crises, Manipuri women continue to inspire with their resilience,” she stated. Historian Dr. Malem Ningthouja reflected on the movement’s broader impact. “Nupi Lan reminds us of Manipuri women’s fight against colonial oppression and today’s challenges, like narco-terrorism. Their sacrifices fuel hope for rebuilding our community,” he noted.
