NSF demands full repeal of AFSPA in Naga districts

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has strongly condemned the recent extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958 (AFSPA), across several Naga-inhabited districts, calling it a violation of the people’s democratic rights. The Ministry of Home Affairs extended the AFSPA through notification S.O. 1536(E), dated March 30, 2025, declaring the areas “disturbed” for another six months starting April 1.

Terming the decision “regressive” and “detached from ground realities,” the NSF said the move disregards the community’s consistent pursuit of peace through non-violence. It warned that the act continues to inflict “suffering, trauma, and fear” on generations of Naga people. The student body cited instances of extra-judicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and harassment as longstanding consequences of the law. It also criticized the act for undermining the Indo-Naga political dialogue and called it a provocation against collective aspirations for peace.

The NSF reaffirmed its demand for AFSPA’s complete repeal and announced a policy of total non-cooperation with the Indian armed forces. All affiliated units and subordinate bodies have been directed to avoid joint events or civic programs involving military personnel.
