NPP Under Fire as CoMSO Questions Silence on GHADC Poll Issue

The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has criticized the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) for failing to address the participation of non-tribals in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections. CoMSO chairman Roy Kupar Synrem emphasized that the NPP has neglected the issue for eight years despite their leadership in the MDA alliance, which he described as unacceptable. He accused the party of using ambiguity and procrastination to avoid taking action, particularly during a period where the rights and identity of indigenous tribal people are threatened.

Synrem highlighted that vague commitments from the NPP, such as intentions to examine the matter or promises to resolve the issue, have not resulted in tangible actions, leaving legal ambiguities unresolved. He urged the government to take immediate, concrete steps to respect both the autonomy of the GHADC and the rights of the A’chik community. The CoMSO leader raised concerns regarding the NPP’s political will, suggesting that ongoing inaction raises questions about their sincerity.

He called for prompt measures to ensure the integrity of the GHADC elections and to rectify any issues compromising the constitutional rights of the A’chik people. Synrem warned that the patience of the indigenous communities is waning, indicating that continued neglect could fuel significant anger and dissatisfaction towards the current government, leading to greater unrest.
