Congress MP and chairperson of the Screening Committee, Priyanka Gandhi on Thursday downplayed the political impact of former Assam PCC president Bhupen Borah quitting the party, saying that switching parties ahead of an election is “common” in Indian politics. Interacting with media persons after holding a series of meetings in Guwahati, Gandhi, while reacting to Borah’s decision to quit Congress, remarked that it is common for some leaders to switch parties in the run-up to elections. She further asserted that the Congress continued to have a strong leadership in Assam.
“The party remains united and capable of mounting an effective challenge in the upcoming Assembly elections. We will contest unitedly and strongly. We consider this election a battle. We have many warriors, and we will win. Over the next two days, we will continue consultations to ensure proper ticket distribution and contest the elections in a strong and organized manner,” she said. Meanwhile, after a day full of engagements, the Congress MP remained busy with party work at Rajiv Bhavan late into the night. She held separate meetings with the presidents of all 35 district committees.
Subsequently, she also interacted individually with all the Congress MLAs and discussed strategy and future course of action. Earlier in the day, she participated in a meeting of the Political Affairs Department regarding the forthcoming Assembly elections. She also held discussions with members of the Screening Committee, who had been touring various constituencies across Assam and interacting with grassroots workers to gather feedback.
