Nepal has exported a record 1.6 billion units of electricity to India in the first quarter of 2025, up 70% from the same period last year. The surge is attributed to increased rainfall and the operational expansion of the Upper Tamakoshi and Kaligandaki projects.
The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) says energy exports generated over NPR 10 billion ($75 million) in revenue between January and March alone. The majority of this power is being supplied to India’s Bihar and Uttar Pradesh regions during peak demand hours.
This trade strengthens energy cooperation between the two countries and contributes to Nepal’s goal of becoming a regional power hub. Indian energy analysts are calling for long-term grid integration with Nepal to address seasonal shortages in eastern India. Such cooperation may serve as a blueprint for similar projects between India and Bhutan in the future.
