According to the advisory, criminals are targeting WhatsApp users by sending malicious links or APK files through WhatsApp or other messaging platforms. When clicked, these links can compromise users’ accounts, while installing APK files may lead to account breaches. In another common tactic, hackers trick users into sharing their WhatsApp verification codes, gaining unauthorized access to their accounts.
Once infiltrated, hacked WhatsApp accounts are often exploited to solicit money from contacts or engage in other fraudulent activities. The police have strongly recommended that users enable two-step verification to add an extra layer of protection against such hacks. In addition to this, users are urged to avoid clicking on unfamiliar links or downloading files from untrusted sources. They are also advised not to share their WhatsApp verification codes, as the platform will never request such information. If a user’s account is compromised, the police urge immediate contact with authorities to prevent further misuse.
The advisory also emphasizes the importance of verifying monetary requests by directly calling the person making the request to confirm its authenticity. Spreading awareness among friends and family about these scams is crucial to minimizing financial losses and preventing criminal activity.
