The Nagaland Legislative Assembly has constituted two new committees to tackle climate change and enhance the efficiency of local governance. These panels will focus on environmental sustainability and the effective functioning of rural and urban local bodies, ensuring a more structured approach to governance and policy implementation in the state.Speaker Sharingain Longkumer emphasized that these committees reflect the Assembly’s commitment to bringing governance closer to the people while incorporating a global perspective.”The continuous efforts of our Assembly members to enhance governance made the establishment of these committees not just necessary, but urgent,” Longkumer stated.The Committee on Climate Change will play a pivotal role in shaping legislative responses to environmental challenges. Its responsibilities include:
Evaluating climate policies and government initiatives on environmental commitments.
Advocating for improvements in air and water quality, particularly in major rivers.
Supporting sustainability measures, such as green budgeting, electric vehicle adoption, and eco-friendly agricultural practices.
Meanwhile, the Committee on Urban Local Bodies & Nagaland Village Councils will focus on strengthening decentralization and improving local governance. It will address:
Waste management and water supply challenges.
Housing for the underprivileged and solutions for traffic regulation and pollution control.
Providing policy recommendations to enhance local self-governance.
Strengthening Governance and Policy-Making
Speaker Longkumer expressed confidence in the committee members, who assumed their roles on Saturday, stating that they are well-equipped to effectively address these crucial issues. In addition to these two committees, the Nagaland Assembly has also introduced 14 more financial and non-financial committees, along with the panel of chairpersons for the 2025-2026 term, further reinforcing its commitment to comprehensive governance and policy-making.
