Nagaland allocates ₹10 crore for solar power initiative in 2025-26 budget

In a major push toward renewable energy, the Nagaland government has launched the Nagaland Solar Mission to accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar power across the state. The first meeting of the mission, chaired by Chief Secretary Dr. J Alam, was held on Monday to discuss the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The central scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet on February 29, 2024, aims to provide 300 units of free electricity per month to one crore households nationwide through rooftop solar installations. Under this initiative, the central government offers subsidies between 60% and 54% for 1 kW to 3 kW solar systems.

Taking a step further, the Nagaland government has announced additional state subsidies to ease the financial burden on consumers. Residents installing rooftop solar panels will receive combined financial assistance of up to 96% for installations up to 2 kW and 85% for systems up to 3 kW, making the transition to solar energy more affordable. To support this initiative, the state has allocated ₹10 crore in the 2025-26 financial year. Additionally, a Solar Mission Team will be set up at the Directorate level, while a Solar Mission Cell will be established at the Secretariat level to oversee the execution of the scheme.

The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Finance Commissioner, Secretary of Power, Engineer-in-Chief (Power), and key personnel from the Power Department. Officials discussed strategies for smooth implementation and the need to raise awareness about the benefits of solar energy among citizens.
