Naga students protest AFSPA extension, demand complete repeal

The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has strongly condemned the recent extension of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA), 1958 in various Naga-inhabited districts, calling it a grave violation of the people’s rights and dignity.

In a statement issued on Monday, the NSF termed the decision “regressive” and disconnected from ground realities. The extension, notified by the Ministry of Home Affairs through S.O. 1536(E) dated March 30, 2025, has designated several areas as “disturbed” for another six months, effective April 1.

The Federation said the move undermines the Indo-Naga political dialogue and perpetuates a climate of fear, citing past instances of extra-judicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and harassment under AFSPA. “This law has inflicted trauma across generations,” the statement said.

Reaffirming its demand for the complete repeal of AFSPA, the NSF announced a policy of total non-cooperation with the Indian armed forces. It directed its Federating Units and subordinate bodies to avoid all joint civic or ceremonial events involving the military.
