Titular king and Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has called on the Centre to take necessary measures to preserve the Koirengei Airfield as a national heritage site due to its historical significance during World War II. In the Parliament session, he emphasized that the airfield, constructed by American engineers around 1942-43, was crucial for the Allied forces’ operations in the Imphal region against the advancing Japanese troops. It not only served as a strategic military site but also supported thousands of Allied troops. Historical records show that it enabled intense military activities and housed displaced populations from Burma during the conflict. Sanajaoba voiced concerns over the site’s deterioration from unregulated construction and military presence, expressing disappointment among the people of Manipur regarding its current state. He advocated for the site’s preservation and development as a National Heritage Site to safeguard its legacy for future generations.
