Month-Long Events Mark Start of 46th Realization Month Observance

The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) has commenced its observance of the 46th Realisation Month from March 17 to April 17, 2023, under the theme “Realize to Save the Indigenous People of Manipur.” This month-long initiative seeks to raise awareness concerning the protection of indigenous identity, demographic changes, and the challenges posed by the influx of outsiders into the state. AMSU has planned a variety of activities, including seminars, public meetings, campaigns, competitions, and rallies throughout Manipur to engage the community in this critical dialogue.

During the launch of the observance, AMSU President Lukram Malangba highlighted historical agitations spearheaded by the union in the years 1980 and 1994 which focused on resisting the influx of outsiders. He emphasized the ongoing concerns regarding demographic changes and the presence of external populations, calling for vigilance and action. In honoring past sacrifices, Malangba paid tribute to two student leaders, Potshangbam Premananda (Lukhoi) and Huidrom Lokendra, who were killed during the “Go Back Foreigners” movement in 1980, advocating for continued remembrance and recognition of their impact on the movement.

April 17, designated as “Realisation Day,” will culminate the month with a public gathering and commemorative events, reinforcing the commitment to uphold the rights and identity of the indigenous population of Manipur. AMSU has consistently observed this day as “Meekap Thokpa Numit” to commemorate the students’ sacrifices during the pivotal events of 1980, where two students lost their lives amid calls for regulatory mechanisms on migrant entry into the state. On this occasion, the organization reaffirms its dedication to combat any policies that threaten the rights, culture, traditions, and languages of the region’s indigenous peoples.
